Abstract

In today’s times of COVID, we are all well accustomed to safety measures. Especially as (bio)chemists, setting up a small-scale experiment in a laboratory confronts us with several safety measures and restrictions to conduct research in a safe manner. This makes us wonder what rigorous safety regulation system is required in large-scale settings in the chemical industry, where tons of hazardous chemicals are produced and transported every day. During this presentation, you will be guided through the different layers of handling safety risks within the (bio)chemical industry, taking BASF Antwerp as a case study. Within the framework of Belintra, a cooperation between the Belgian federal government, essenscia and the chemical industry, BASF’s intervention services provide expertise and intervene during incidents concerning the transportation of chemicals. Through several practical examples, such as the crash of a freight train carrying 300 tons of acrylonitrile in Wetteren (May 4th, 2013), this sometimes complex topic on safety will become more tangible. At the end of the lecture, you will have a clearer picture of how the chemical industry mitigates risks when working with chemicals.
