Abstract

Trends in coating and finishing of textiles

In the presentation an overview will be given regarding the topics investigated within the Textile Functionalisation & Surface Modification research group:

  • Biobased / biodegradable coatings, inks, resins,
  • Separation & recycling of complex multi-layer materials,
  • Smart & conductive coatings and inks,
  • Resins & sizing for composite applications
  • REACH-compliant functionalisation of materials


Application of polymers in textile fibers: market and trends

Polymers are omnipresent in daily life and have also become an integral component of textile fibers, offering a diverse range of properties that enhance the functionality and performance of textile materoams. This presentation explores the application of various polymers in textile fibers including both conventional and biobased polymers, each bringing unique characteristics like durability, elasticity, moisture-wicking, and resistance to environmental factors. The presentation also examines the current market dynamics, including the growing demand for sustainable textiles driven by advancements in polymer technology. Trends such as the increasing use of bio-based polymers, the integration of smart functionalities, and the emphasis on recycling and circular economy principles are discussed.

Speakers

Myriam Vanneste has obtained a PhD in Polymer Science and is currently R&D manager at Centexbel in the division working on developments for coatings and finishes for various substrates such as textiles, plastics, paper, etc.

Isabel De Schrijver holds a PhD in Analytical Chemistry from Ghent University, where she focused on developing and validating analytical methods for determining additives in plastics. She started at Centexbel in 2008 as a research scientist in the Functional Thermoplastic Textiles group. In this role, she worked on various topics, including nanotechnology and fire retardancy, with a specialization in extrusion applications. On April 1st, 2014, she became the R&D Manager of the PCPR (Plastic Characterisation, Processing & Recycling) group. Since June 2020, she is the R&D Manager for both the FTT (Functional Thermoplastic Textiles) and PCPR (Plastic Characterisation, Processing & Recycling) research groups.

Centexbel-VKC offers a dynamic competence centre and test laboratory to the plastics processing industry. Centexbel-VKC provides services in the fields of material characterisations, failure analyses, product development, process optimisation and new applications of plastics, virgin and recycled polymers, fibre reinforced composites, rubber, coating, smart materials and biopolymers.
