Company visit: Sciensano
Sciensano assesses the risks posed by chemical substances, non-infectious biological and physical agents present in the environment, food, consumables, medicines and health products. In this context, Sciensano studies their presence, their toxicity and their concentrations. We then compare these data with consumption and/or health data to assess the potential risks and their consequences for public health.
The scientific directorate hosts the official medical control laboratory for the analysis of medicines, as well as several reference laboratories for food safety analysis. Sciensano’s services work in the interests of public health and provide the health authorities and the citizens with objective and reliable information on the risks associated with (counterfeit) medicines, pesticides, toxins and other food or feed contaminants, ionising and non-ionising radiation, air pollution, nano-materials, etc.
